SHASTA WINGS!!!!

NEED SHASTA WINGS?

I AM YOUR GUY!

I offer reproduction wings for sale. These are the highest quality reproductions available anywhere. I have been building these for several years now and would happy to help make your Shasta complete.

The wings on a Shasta are outrageous and fantastic. Unfortunately, many original owners took them off and threw them away thinking that they were perhaps too gaudy. But today they are iconic and no Shasta camper is complete without them. They represent a different era in vehicle design. For a Shasta, the wings are the cherry on the sundae.

I make all of my 1.5" thick wings with my custom designed 3-line trim. This is a bright anodized aluminum trim I designed myself. This is a direct throwback to the original trim used in the mid 60's and looks fantastic for all years.

New trim on a set of 42 X 9s. This trim style is used on all sizes

New trim on a set of 27 X 7s

WHAT YOU GET AND HOW I DO IT:

You get both wings with brushed aluminum skins. They are a nice bright finish (like the look of a stainless kitchen sink), not 100% polished. You can polish them if you so choose. The moldings that wrap the wings with are also aluminum. They are a retro, 3 line single piece (think of the edging at a diner counter top) with a bright finish (see photos). The molding is held on with stainless flat head screws.

You also get all of the required mounting hardware for your style camper and desired mounting technique.

Here is how the wings are constructed:

Step 1: Making the Skins
I cut the blanks in the .025 thick exterior grade aluminum from templates that I have created using ORIGINAL wings. That means the shape is exactly as they were originally from the factory I used a bead roller with a custom made set of rollers that form the bead style lines. This took months of experimentation to get it right. After quite an effort these lines are exact duplicates of what was done originally and are straight as an arrow! Each line is spaced 1 inch apart as they were on the original wings.

Finished Set

Inside of Skin

Step 2: Frames
I make the cores out of PVC Board. Its pricey stuff but won't rot. Everything is solvent welded, nailed and screwed together. All of the areas that will have mounting screws in them have full support so the wing won't dent when mounting on the trailer (unlike original wings that can crush when you put the screws in). These frames make the wings very strong and light (only a few pounds each) They are much more rigid than the original wings.

Step 3: Moldings

Next the mouldings get wrapped around the wing, trimmed, drilled and screwed in place. The skin is pinched behind the molding.

These are 36" X 8" Standoff style mounting (old style trim shown, no longer used)

These are 42" X 9" Standoff style mounting

The wings are mounted with stainless screws. Mounting the wings is the responsability of the buyer. You must make sure that the wings are securely mounted to your trailer and into good solid wood, a drawing of the optimum mounting locations are included as well:

9" wings come with a 10 screw kit (5/wing)
8"wings come with an 8 screw kit (4/wing)
7" wings come with a 6 screw kit (3/wing)

Standoff Style:  #10 Stainless Screws 3" long with 3/4" tall Nylon spacers.

(10 screw standoff mounting kit)

Direct Mount:  #10 Stainless Screws 2 1/4" Long, with 10 rubber washers

Here are some Photos of the wings mounted on the camper. Also take a look at my Customer Gallery for photos of my wings on customer campers. Again these will all be shown with the old style trim but are great examples of how my wings look on these fantastic campers.

Please visit my Customer Gallery Tab for photos of my wings on my customers campers.

  3. are the SCS wings 8 x 30 or 8 x 36?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Scott Sorry I didnt see this question before. If you have an SCS with the"rear door" you need 8X30... the 36" wings are too long and overlap the door

  4. I just bought a 1962 13' Airflyte. Are the wings supposed to be the 27"?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All Airflytes are 42"X9" wings regaurdless of year. Your camper should be 13' but 16' to the end of the hitch. if your camper is smaller, you dont have an Airflyte and it would possibly be a Compact which had 36"X8"

  5. I have a 1967 SHasta that I would love wings for, any idea what size I need?

    1. For a 1967 you are probably talking about 27X7" however it depends on your model. If you email me we can make sure you get the right size for your camper.

    2. Hi, love these beautiful wings. We just purchased a 1971 compact. Is 27x7 the correct size for us? Thanks

    1. I THINK these were 27X7... you can tell by your hole spacing. IF its 3 hole and the verticle spacing is about 5.5-6.5" appart they had 7" wings.

  8. We have a 1969 Shasta StarFlyte that we are restoring. It had No Wings, but 3 holes, 5.5 apart. I'm guessing we want 27X7 Wings. Where do you measure a trailer? Longest points are 15', 13' at bottom, 18' w tounge, 7-8 wide. Do we call it 15'? Anyway need to get your wings! PLZ reply.

    1. I would be happy to help you out! Yes you need 27X7's. If you are interested in a set of wings please contact me at tylerbes@gmail.com

The length of your trailer is measured from hitch to rear bumper. When people say an Airflyte or 16SC is 16" long... that is how it is measured.

  9. Hi Your wings are great! I have a Shasta from 1963 it is 14 feet long. What size wings does it need?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you Cassandra. If you are measuring the body of the camper at 14'... that would make the hitch to tail about 16' you have an Airflyte or 16SC. Both take 9X42's. However if you are measuring to the hitch now you may have a Compact or a 1500. Both would have 8X36's. You should see the mounting holes. If you want to send me a photo of the camper by email I can tell you right away.

  11. Janet...sorry for the very late response I didn't see your message. Short answer is NO. They look fantastic with the wings added. I have had a couple of customers who have done it and I think it makes the 1500's look even better (if that is possible, they are my favorite model/years)

It is the all aluminum style. I am doing up another 1956 -1600 , would you use 42 x 9 on it, even though it didn't come with them ????

Thanks for the comments! I would be happy to sell you 1 wing... however it wont match perfectly... the new one will look better. I happen to have 1 original wing from your exact year. If its the correct side I can sell it to you. Shoot me an email at tylerbes@gmail.com.

As for your 1600 you could go with 8X36 or 9X42... use cardboard templates to see which you prefer and go from there.

  25. hi! I have a 1971 Shasta 1400 or 1600 I think - 17' feet... I am only looking for answers on a few questions: 1) the metal I have on the one wing I have seems to have a crisscross pattern diamond shaped across the whole surface of the face along with the horizontal lines. Your product has smooth surface aluminum surfaces. can you source the original version of the faces of the wings?
    2) what is the type or do you have a source for the aluminum edge nosing ( i think this is 1 1/4 " edged on both corners)

also I don't seem to have notches on the drip rail for the wings.. I will need to deal with spacers on the wings -

Let me know if you have any info on this version of the shasta.

    peace

1)The diamond pattern is not available (I looked everywhere)
2)My trim is custom made for me. Purchased a die set to get it extruded. There was nothing on the market that fit right... so I did it myself :)
      3) If you don't have a notch in the drip rail you need standoffs. 3/4" long which I provide

    2. My 1967 Shasta Compact needs wings, too. I measured the spacing between the four holes. It's about the same as your dimensions (6.75 and 18.5). I'd love to know the answer, too! From the previous posts and answers it appears 27 x 7 but the four holes is making me wonder if they need to be larger.

    3. Sorry for the insanely late response but based on that hole spacing the wings would be 8X36"

  32. I have a 1959 pyramid trailer built in Windsor or Fredericton Ontario I don't believe it has wings but we're looking to make this trailer a little more stylish to pull behind our 1959 Pontiac Catalina station wagon would you suggest Wings on this and if so what size

    1. This issue you may have (if this is the model I think it is) will be with that upper back window. Looks like 8X36 would fit well but you will need to do some good measuring and make sure the wing will fit right and be secured into the frame of the camper. Please send me an email if you are interested.

  36. Hello. We recently bought a 1976 Shasta 1600. Did these actually come out with wings or not? If so what size? Also..our camper has had a modern awning added.I wonder if there would be a way to build out the top brackets so wings could be installed and not interfere with a closed awning

  39. I have an 11' 1966 Shasta she's small, but the holes for the wings are 7" apart and the 'fade' spot from the previous wings look to be about 26" to the end of the trailer, I was thinking 27 x 7 but the old holes would be outside of the 7" wings.. I'm confused on what size wings she needs. Anyone have an answer? 8x30 but no one makes that size...
